Understanding Spinal Cord Injuries

A spinal cord injury occurs when there is severe damage to the spinal column. Due to the sensitivity of the spinal cord, even minor trauma can cause a permanent, disabling injury. When the spinal cord is pinched, bruised, severed, or otherwise damaged, the nerve connection between the brain and certain parts of the body are lost. As a result, the individual may lose movement and/or sensation in the arms, legs, torso, and other areas depending on the level of the injury.

  • Quadriplegia: Quadriplegia is a severe spinal cord injury characterized by lost movement in both the upper and lower extremities. Quadriplegia is frequently the result of a neck injury or upper back injury during a car accident or other traumatic accident.
  • Paraplegia: Paraplegia is a spinal cord injury characterized by lost function and/or sensation in the low torso and lower extremities. As with quadriplegia, paraplegia can result from a motor vehicle accident, surgical mishap, or other catastrophic accident.

Our Connecticut injury attorney has clear understanding of the impact spinal cord injury victims endure. Extensive medical treatment is necessary in the months following the accident. However, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other medical treatment may be a lasting need. In addition, special care may be required long-term.

Our law firm investigates the events which led to the spinal cord injury. When negligence is involved, we pursue a claim to recover full compensation on our client's behalf.
